"Understanding the UBL Library" is a two-day lecture course providing background and descriptions of the documents and content models used to create UBL 2.0. Its focus is on the business implementation perspective and does not dwell on the technology involved.
This is a course on the interpretation of specific UBL information items in a business context. It covers design, implementation and customization of UBL models and will introduce some related concepts such as ebXML Core Components and Document Engineering.
Case study are provided and attendees are encouraged to discuss their own requirements and experiences in a set of workshop exercises.
At the end of this course attendees will have a basic grounding in the design philosophy of UBL and the most appropriate ways to adapt and implement this into specific environments.
The course will be based upon the soon to be released UBL 2 specification.

Port Community Systems is the corporate entity owned and operated by Tim McGrath. The name reflects his 15 years heritage in the shipping industry. Since that time his experience has expanded into general uses of EDI and electronic commerce (but the name remained the name).
For the past five years Tim has worked with the OASIS UBL Technical Committee and is currently the Vice-chair. During this time, he has been promoting UBL in Denmark, UK, US, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Spain and China.
In 2005 he published (with Bob Glushko) Document Engineering: Designing Documents for Business Informatics and Web Services from MIT Press. Document Engineering synthesizes complementary ideas from information and systems analysis, electronic publishing, business process analysis, and business informatics to ensure that the documents and processes make sense to the people and applications that need them. The Document Engineering approach has evolved as part of the growth and experiences of UBL. Tim also teaches An Introduction to Document Engineering as part of the Masters of Electronic Commerce course at Hong Kong University.
